Vacation-Ready Clothes: Pre and Post-Trip Cleaning Tips Clean Your Clothes Before You Pack Them

Before You Go

Even if your clothing may appear clean, there may be some hidden perspirant, oil, deodorant, and perfume stains. Be sure to keep an eye out for any of these sneaky stains. Send your outfits to the dry cleaners before you pack up your suitcase, especially if they are made of linen, silk, or delicate cotton.

Make sure to pack smart! If you are bringing any wrinkle prone items, pack them in a garment bag. Additionally, try to avoid over-stuffing your suitcase. That only leads to more wrinkles. Packing cubes are a great way to keep your garments organized and smooth on trips. Lastly, adding tissue paper between layers helps to keep delicate fabrics smooth!

After you return

Check your clothes as quickly as possible after returning home. Stains such as sunscreen, wine, or food spills will soak in fast! The sooner you get them professionally cleaned, the better chance they can be fully removed.

Don’t rehang your worn clothes. Even if they appear to be clean, worn clothes can still carry odors, perspiration, and bacteria. Fabrics such as silk and linen are especially prone to odor retention. Before putting them back up in the closet, bring them to the dry cleaner.

Make sure to store smart! Help your clothing stay fresh by storing it in breathable garment bags and keeping it in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. Somewhere such as a basement or storage closet are great options.
