Ever wonder what the symbols on your clothing tags mean?

While those tiny symbols might seem like a puzzle, they are actually the key to making your clothes last longer. Ignoring them is the fastest way to turn a “Large” sweater into an “Extra-Small” or ruin the texture of a delicate blouse.

Here is your quick guide to decoding the four most common laundry symbols.

1. The Washtub (Washing)

This symbol tells you how to wash the garment.

Number or Dots: If you see dots inside the tub, they represent temperature. One dot means cold, two means warm, and three mean hot. T

The Hand: If there’s a hand reaching into the tub, it’s Hand Wash Only.

The “X”: A big X through the tub means Do Not Wash (usually followed by a Dry Clean symbol).

2. The Triangle (Bleaching)

Before you reach for the Clorox, check the triangle.

Empty Triangle: Any bleach is fine.

Triangle with Stripes: Use only non-chlorine (color-safe) bleach.

Solid “X” over the Triangle: Do not use bleach at all—it will likely damage or discolor the fibers.

3. The Square (Drying)

Drying is where most “laundry accidents” happen.

Circle inside the Square: This means you can tumble dry. Just like the wash tub, the dots indicate heat (one for low, two for medium, three for high).

The Vertical Lines: This means Line Dry.

The Horizontal Line: This means Dry Flat (common for wool and knits to prevent stretching).

4. The Circle (Professional Care)

If you see a plain circle, it’s time to bring that item to the experts.

Empty Circle: This item is Dry Clean Only.

Circle with a Letter: These letters (like P or F) are instructions for your professional cleaner regarding which solvents to use. You don’t need to worry about the letters—that’s our job!

Why It Matters

Clothing manufacturers are required by law to provide these care instructions. Following them doesn’t just keep your clothes clean; it prevents shrinking, pilling, and fading.

Still feeling unsure about a delicate item? Don’t risk it! Some fabrics are incredibly temperamental. Bring your item to Eagle Cleaners to ensure it is properly handled and your clothing stays in perfect condition.
